Bashkir is spoken in the Republic of Bashkortostan in Russia and is the closest relative of Tatar — the two are nearly mutually intelligible. Bashkir has unique phonological features rare in Turkic languages: pharyngeal consonants (ҡ, ғ) and a distinctive sound inventory shaped by centuries of contact with Finno-Ugric peoples. The Bashkir folk epic tradition and the oral poetry of the jyrau (poet-singers) form the backbone of its literary heritage.
