Türkmen dili
Turkmen belongs to the Oghuz branch alongside Turkish and Azerbaijani, and its speakers are descendants of the Oghuz Turks who founded the Seljuk Empire in the 11th century. Uniquely among Oghuz languages, Turkmen preserves phonemically distinct long vowels (ā, ē, ō, ū) reflecting older Proto-Turkic phonology lost in Turkish. The national poet Magtymguly Pyragy (c. 1724–1807) is revered across generations — his poems calling for Turkmen unity and freedom are memorised from childhood and remain the emotional core of Turkmen cultural identity.
