Kyrgyz is the national language of Kyrgyzstan and one of the oldest attested Turkic peoples — the Yenisei Kyrgyz were recorded in Chinese chronicles as far back as the 2nd century BCE. Kyrgyz is home to the world's longest oral epic tradition: the Epic of Manas, spanning over 500,000 lines across three generations of heroes, preserved by manaschi (master reciters) and inscribed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage. The language preserves more archaic Turkic phonological features than Kazakh.
