Uyghur is spoken by the Uyghur people, who maintain one of the oldest literate Turkic cultures in history. The ancient Uyghur script (8th century CE) became the ancestor of the Mongolian and Manchu writing systems. Medieval Uyghur kingdoms on the Silk Road — especially Khocho (Gaochang) — synthesised Buddhist, Manichean, and Islamic influences into a unique civilisation. Today Uyghur uses a fully vowelled Perso-Arabic script, making it one of the most phonetically complete Arabic-based writing systems in use.
