Tatar is a Kipchak Turkic language spoken primarily in Tatarstan, Russia, and is one of the most historically documented Turkic languages. Kazan — the Tatar capital — was a leading centre of Islamic scholarship and Arabic printing in the Russian Empire. The Jadidist reform movement, which modernised Islamic education across the Turkic world, was largely championed by Tatars. The beloved national poet Gabdulla Tuqay (1886–1913) wrote verses that remain the emotional heart of Tatar cultural identity today.
